10 Ways To Feeling More Zen

10 top tips on introducing some zen into your life! Words & pictures by Hayley...

Zen. noun. 1. "A Japanese school, of 12th - century Chinese origin, teaching that contemplation of one's essential nature to the exclusion of all else is the only way of achieving pure enlightenment."

Truth be told girls, I've got my mojo back!

And it was completely unexpected!

I've just returned home from a 3-day break to the W Hotel in Verbier with my BFF and I feel so good. Sometimes I don't think you realise how much you need a break until you actually have one. Countless people are always saying to me 'but you're always on holiday' or 'your so lucky to travel so much'; and oh my god I am so lucky! There isn't a day that goes by that I don't thank my lucky stars that this is my job. However, press trips aren't holidays, as bloggers we're constantly posting on social media, checking emails, and coming home with 4,000 pictures to edit and write up; it's not quite the same as just laying on a beach for a week!

Anyway, I digress. My point being is that I've just returned from the best break with my best friend, we always have the best time when we're together; we genuinely didn't stop laughing the whole time we were there. We drunk champagne at breakfast because; why the hell not?, we laid by the pool all day reading our books and napping, we ate out at the local pub and enjoyed burgers and beer, then tried to drunkenly navigate our way home on the ice (queue bambi on ice and so many LOLZ).

It's funny that, the reason we were actually in Verbier was for work; I had a few things I wanted to shoot, but with Amy it never feels like work, it was just so much fun and it was super relaxed, we worked on our own terms and we relaxed on our own terms. After three days of pure R&R the trip has left me feeling so inspired, refreshed and rearing to kick off some amazing Christmas content here on FMIF from me and my ladies!

So, without further ado (aka waffle), here are my top 8 tips to leave you feeling more zen...

Like I said, sometimes we don't know we need a break until we actually take a break! Whether you set off on a few days of solo adventure, or with a best friend, it could even be loosing yourself in a good book for a few hours or locking yourself in the bathroom with a hot bubble bath and some vino. However we decide to escape, sometimes it does us the world of good to just 'get away' from reality for a while and escape to another land whether it's IRL or fantasy (nothing beats getting stuck into a juicy fiction book like Twilight / Hunger Games to take your mind off that looming tax return!). If you're looking for a winter escape then I genuinely can't recommend the W Verbier anymore (but more on that soon!).

Stripe PJ top: Boden | Stripe PJ bottoms: Boden | Red Slippers: Boden | Hot water bottle: Boden

Now, I've made it no secret that I'm all about that Hygge life! Cosy pyjamas, feeling snug by the fire, hot chocolate and loved ones… that's a yes from me! It's that feeling when you get new PJ's or have freshly washed sheets, you can't help but feel content and snug, I find that feeling snug always helps my mind to feel more at ease as I'm happy and cosy!

Nothing makes me happier than spending my time with my family, bestie and my love! If ever I'm feeling stressed or that life is just getting 'too much' - the first thing I do to feel more me is to surround myself with people I love. It's so nice to take your mind off of things, share stories and memories and to laugh with the people who mean the most for you, if even for ten minutes a day or on a Sunday, quality time with loved ones is something that I truly cherish!

4.) 'ME' TIME

As much as I'm a massive advocate for family time and being with loved ones, I'm also really independent and genuinely love spending time in my own company. I wouldn't think twice about going shopping alone, or out to dinner, or travelling abroad - I think it's really important to have some time to ourselves, in whatever capacity that maybe. During our trip we spent our days laying by the pool, I finished one book and started another, dosed in and out of naps and visited the sauna and steam room. It felt so, so good to just clear my head and to think of; well nothing. I can't remember the last time I wasn't stressing over scheduling content or replying to emails, planning trips and pitching ideas, it was so lovely to just switch off for a couple of days so I could refresh myself!

I always find that when I'm having some down time and relaxing is the one time when I instantly feel more inspired. When you truly focus on doing nothing, your mind is filled with creativity, since coming back from my trip (which was only yesterday!), I've felt so refreshed and full of ideas. For the first time in a long time I feel ready to get stuck into my work and I can't wait to get creating content that I love again!

I truly believe that a healthy body = a healthy mind! Whilst we were away admittedly we drank all of the prosecco and filled up on Toblerone (had to make the most of it before it changes here in the UK… our excuse anyway), but every morning we made the most of the fresh fruit juices available at the W Verbier! Our favourite was the carrot, apple and ginger juice, it left us feeling refreshed and awake; make sure you're fuelling your body with goodness!

For our trip, I bought myself and Amy matching pyjamas (still can't work out if we're cute AF or sad AF?!), each evening we walked to the local pub for homemade burgers and Brooklyn beer, we reminisced about our childhood (we've been BFF's since we were 11!), then once back in our room we'd catch up on Planet Earth, sip on Prosseco and laugh until we cried. I absolutely adore spending time with my girls, and as much as I love a good night out, I also really, really love to just order a takeaway and talk about boys over some alcoholic beverages. I truly believe that one of the main keys to feeling zen is really indulging in some chill time, where you can really take your mind off of everyday life!

Matching PJ's: Primark | Red slippers: Boden | Grey slippers: Emu

Whether you're off for a full one hike, a brisk walk or to even sit in the garden and get some fresh air, I find that nothing quite clears the cobwebs like stepping outside and soaking up the views and what's going on around me. Having a job online means that 80% of my time is spent glued to my laptop or phone, so I think more than ever, I truly appreciate spending time outside, just soaking up those 'offline vibes'!

Do something spontaneous, or 'just because' you want to, and you'll feel so much better for it! Sometimes we don't always need to justify our actions, if we want to do something then that should be enough to spur us on and do it. During our trip myself and Amy had prosecco for breakfast each morning 'just because' (although pretty sure every morning is meant to start with bubbles if you ask me!), at first we were like 'ooh probably shouldn't' but then soon came round to the 'why the hell not' thinking! Whether you want to treat yourself to those boots you've been eyeing up, or eating cake for breakfast when it ain't nobodies birthday - something it's good to do things for the sake of it!

10.) SMILE!

Probably the key puzzle piece to feeling more zen and 'at one' with yourself is to smile! I love to laugh, I'm a pretty optimistic person and look for the best in people and situations! On our trip in Verbier I genuinely laughed non-stop and it really was the best kind of medicine, and don't forget that smiling is infectious! So, chances are that by smiling or radiating positive vibes, you're actually making someone else's day too!
