Why I Had A Digital Detox For A Week

Why I chose to spend 8 days laptop free and why you should too! - Words by Hayley - Picture by Vicky...

Last night I landed home from an INCREDIBLE 8 day trip to Costa Rica, the jet lag is killing me; I slept for a solid 10 hours and feel like I could still sleep more.. sayyyyyyy what?! Before the trip I made a decision that I hadn't dont this year; I decided to leave my laptop at home. Every press trip or holiday that I've been on this year, I've taken my laptop and worked on the go, but this time - I just didn't want to. I wanted to feel present, to be in the moment with everyone and enjoy what was going on around me rather than worrying about what work I had to do when I got back to the room!

So, how did it feel?

OHMIGOD  to leave my laptop at home was the best decision I've made in a LONG time! I don't think I realised how much I needed a break from work; since the re launch myself and the girls are posting daily, I love the team and the work we're creating, it just takes up so much time to constantly be planning, managing and scheduling in, as well as social media etc etc. The decision came when a few weeks ago I was so, so ill - I'd not long come back from Singapore and was just hit with a virus that completely wiped me out for a week and I haven't felt that ill in such a long time. I felt like it was my bodies way of telling me to stop, I'm that kinda gal that gets ill easily if i'm over tired or overworked but surprisingly haven't been ill this year so far - so when it hit, I felt like it was a long time overdue! The week before I left I was scheduling like crazy and managed to schedule our posts for the whole 8 days whilst I was away, so I could enjoy my trip without worrying about work. I genuinely can't remember the last time I felt like that and it's inspired me to be more organised so that I can enjoy every trip laptop free! We were lucky enough to fly business class and I really just wanted to kick back, watch some films and relax - and boy, it felt so good! Everyone in our group was so, so lovely - I wanted to be present in the moment; to take in the beautiful surroundings and spend some quality time getting to know who I was travelling with rather than spending the evening glued to my laptop working away on content!

So, what now?

I've come home and instantly feel refreshed, it's the best feeling to spend 8 days with like minded bloggers who thrive on creating content; to discuss ideas and plan posts together, to help with Instagram editing and posting, to give each other constructive feedback on how we could each work better. We just had the best group and I felt like I learnt something from each person that I travelled with! I think that by removing the pressure to be working and posting whilst I was there, really allowed me to take a step back, and to really think about what kind of content I want myself and the girls to be working on, what I'd like to see more of on the pages on FMIF, I landed feeling so inspired and actually wrote 2 blog posts on my phone on the way to the airport - I actually felt excited to write these as I'd removed the pressure from myself that I had to write them; it was just purely because I wanted to! I would highly recommend having a digital detox gal pals; and it's 100% something I'll be doing if not every trip, then most trips going forward because it just felt so darn good to enjoy my trip, relax and spend time with our group rather than worrying; I don't think people realise the pressure we put on ourselves as bloggers, we're perfections, we schedule, we create, we work ourselves crazy and then do it all over again. So, once I've slept for maybe another 4 hours and worked out what century I'm in, I can't wait to go through my snaps from this week and to share everything with you all; so excited for you to see the pictures!

Have you had a digital detox before? Did it refresh you too? Is it something you'd consider doing at all? I think we all need to from time to time girls! <3

The idea of a digital detox sounds soooo nice and relaxing! Blogging isn’t even my full time job but I feel like I should definitely take a step back at some point and have one! Glad you came back feeling refreshed, definitely sounds like it was worth it 🙂

Well, I live in the stone ages and don’t have data on my phone. This helps with some “detoxing” during the day. That being said, as soon as I get home the wi-fi is switched on and I’m back in it!

That’s so good lovely – it’s so nice to not have a distraction during the day! I always try to leave my phone away from me when I’m working so I don’t procrastinating! x

I recently took a weekend digital detox. I didn’t work on a single thing! I came back on Monday morning and worked long into the night on all the ideas I had over the weekend. Getting away from the laptop can bring so much inspiration!

I loved hearing about your experience with a digital detox. I think it’s so important to be present, like you said, and that is sometimes hard when you feel the pressure to document your experience or focus on work. Now, I’m feeling inspired to go on a digital detox of my own!

Thank you so much for your lovely comment Helen! I couldn’t agree more – sometimes we’re too ‘switched off’ when really we just need some down time to appreciate what’s going on around us! x

I write blog posts on my phone too! It must have been great to have a digital detox, I plan my posts in advance but I still spend a lot of time doing social media whilst I’m on trips

    • Hayley 31st October 2016 / 9:10 am

Definitely! It was so nice to have my phone as an option in case I wanted to write a post that I just had to get down, but I didn’t feel pressured into working where as if I take my laptop I normally do! x
