8 Things You HAVE To Do In Singapore

I've rounded up 8 things you NEED to try/do/see when visiting Singapore! - Words and Pictures by Hayley...

Back in September I was invited back to Singapore; one of my favourite countries that I have visited as a part of my #12Countries12Months project to watch the F1 and I was SO excited to be back! Whilst I was there I was fortunate to dine at some incredible places, check out some amazing sites and immerse myself in the wonderful culture once again; here are my top 8 recommendations if you're visiting Singapore anytime soon!...

1.) VISIT CHINATOWN...

Chinatown is one of my favourite places in Singapore; first up I LOVE how diverse Singapore is! With multiple cultures and areas you really feel at home wherever you are. Chinatown is super vibrant, decorated with classic red lanterns and lined with authentic Chinese food stalls and restaurants; Chinatown is a must is you're visiting Singapore - you won't be disappointed… promise!

2.) 1* MICHELIN MEAL FOR UNDER £1.50!...

Whilst you're in Chinatown make sure you visit the Chinatown Complex (Singapore's largest hawker centre), the Hong Kong Hawker stall which is the worlds cheapest 1 Michelin star meal, famous for their chicken rice which is sold for a whopping $2 (around £1.30!!), but… this stall has received so much press that everyone is keen to try some! Expect to queue for around 2 hours to be served, if you don't fancy the wait you'll find plenty of other great stalls within the Hawker centre; if you're knew to street food I'd say always aim for a stall that's busy/that the locals are eating at - the food is bound to be good!

3.) VISIT THE NATION GALLERY...

I would highly recommend a visit to the National Gallery; if you're a museum keeno like myself then this gallery is well worth a wander around as it homes some wonderful exhibitions. However, if you're not really into galleries all that much; then I would still recommend a visit, even just to visit the rooftop alone! The views up there across the city are truly, truly stunning! Grab a drink and watch the world go by; or dine at one of the gallery's many restaurants, I dined at the Violet Oon restaurant with family during my stay and the food was wonderful and not overly expensive!

4.) ATTEND A POOL PARTY AT THE W HOTEL...

When I saw 'Wet Deck Pool Party' on my schedule I squealed in delight - I love me a pool party and I was fortunate enough to already be staying at the W Hotel; so when the other European and RoW journalists arrived we all had a section by the pool and were able to soak up the rays for a few hours! The hotel hosts a pool party once a month and I'd highly recommend it! It's great if you're with a group of mates, even a girlfriend or your partner - or heck, anyone would love it! They throw one once a month and you don't have to be staying at the hotel to attend; you can book tickets here!

5.) EAT LUNCH AT REDPAN...

You'll find Redpan at Marina Square (a shopping centre which connects 3 world class hotels; Marina Mandarin Singapore, Mandarin Oriental Singapore and the Pan Pacific Singapore). The restaurant is based on level 2 and the brainchild between DP Architects and GRUB; which opened in March 2016. From the decor to the food everything has been thought of and designed specifically - oh, and the food is also really bloody good! Definitely check this place out!

6.) WATCH THE F1 FROM 1 ALTITUDE BAR...

Now, I know this is really specific to a once-a-year event but oh my god if you ever, ever get the chance to visit Singapore to watch the F1 then you absolutely bloody have to! I'm not going to go into it much right now because I've been saving all that good stuff for a blog post which is coming soon; but for now what I will say is that it's a once in a lifetime thing and you'll never, ever forget it! I watched the last night from 1 Alititude; the world's highest Al Fresco bar (incredible, huh?!) and whilst you can't see too much, the view was just so breathtaking and the experience was one I'll never forget!

7.) HAVE DRINKS AT POTATO HEAD

Now, if you're familiar with Sinagpore (if you're not here's a tip) that Keong Saik road is a super trendy/ up and coming area, packed with hip bars and must-see food joints! If you're in the area or looking for somewhere to eat/drink then I'd highly, highly recommend Potato Head; housed across four floors, you'll find a brand of Jakarta's Three Bun's burger shop, a rooftop bar (a favourite of Chris Hemsworth.. hubba hubba!) and a laid back cocktail bar!

8.) CHECK OUT THE CULTURAL REVOLUTION EXHIBITION BY LI ZHENSHENG

You need to check the Arts House as they host so many wonderful exhibitions which are free, so it's well worth a look around! During my time in Singapore I visited the 'Witness: The Archive of the Cultural Revolution' exhibition; by Li Zhensheng; Li took pictures of the cultural revolution in 1966 and hid the images under his floorboards until it was time to publish them to show both sides of the revolution… it was so moving and a must see if you're visiting!

Singapore has always been a holiday destination for my family and I since I was kid, and I’m absolutely baffled that I haven’t been to the National Gallery before! I tried to last December but didn’t have time in the end. Must visit the next time I’m there!

Ohh the pool party at W looks so much fun! I always wanted to go to an infinity pool in Singapore. We were there when the F1 was on last year, so it was pretty cool to watch! I would add visiting Garden of the Bay on the list 🙂
