The W Hotel in Amsterdam is made up of two buildings, the Royal Dutch Exchange building and just adjacent is the bank building, which yep, you guessed it, used to be an old bank, cool huh? Now if you are a massive interior pervert like myself then you will love the inside of this place, the W brand has a passion for Food, Music, Design and Fuel and this is very much reflected throughout.
- What would you say are the top three positive aspects of this hotel?
The entry, it brings something new to the streets of Amsterdam and we offer luxury in a non-traditional way to not only travellers but also the locals. The two buildings becoming one we have invigorated a whole block, it wasn’t a very desirable area before W Amsterdam was built. A third positive aspect would be, being able to give a platform to young people to come and experience working for us.
2. For anyone wanting to do what you do, what advice would you give?
Be passionate about what you do. The hospitality business is a tough business to be in. I started off working in reception, you will have to start from the bottom and work your way up, if you’re not passionate stop dong it, you will work more than you sleep in life so make sure you’re enjoying it and giving it your all.
- What meals do you recommend from The Duchess Restaurant?
I tend to ask the chefs to bring me a selection off the menu but there are two dishes that are brilliant, the beef wellington and the chocolate bomb for desert, which is unique, and quite the experience. If you are vegetarian I recommend the green risotto or the beetroot Carpaccio.
- So, I have some spare time in Amsterdam, what should I see/do?
In the Summer I recommend renting a bike a cycling around Vondelpark. In the evenings you can always find quirky bars and restaurants, A‘dam Touren has just been converted into posh hotel with a big music scence, with rooftop bars etc. there is always something to do in the evening in Amsterdam.
- What inspires you most about Amsterdam?
The openness! I’ve lived in New York, I’ve lived in London but Amsterdam is the best I’ve city I have seen. I love that like it’s a global village, it’s a city but still small enough to walk around and know someone. It is very picturesque, very beautiful, every morning I still walk around taking pictures, I love it here.
W Amsterdam is not just a hotel. It caters for so much more than getting your head down after busy day sightseeing. It offers an absolutely beautiful Away Spa where you can get an array of treatments, I had the “Hot off the press” massage which is done with hot stones and lets just say the masseur had to wake me up at the end of it (embarrassing I know!).
If it’s shopping you’re after then head to XBANK, here you can pick up awesome pieces from established Dutch designers, I could of spent a fortune in there!
When it comes to eating you are spoilt for choice, I spent most of my time in The Duchess restaurant; it’s elegant and classy décor kept me going back, let alone the delicious a la carte style menu!
If you fancy something a bit different then Mr. Porter is the one for you, serving a Mediterranean buffet style breakfast and all the steak you could wish for. There was a glass cupboard full of it, not even joking, I had to retain myself from jumping in and demolishing the lot!!!
Have you ever stayed at the W Amsterdam before? Is it somewhere you'd like to visit? Are you also a fan of Amsterdam like the FMIF team?
