Unveiling A HUGE Travel project for 2016

12 countries, 12 months, 1 blogger…

Late last year, I came up with the idea for a travel project; to travel 12 countries in 12 months. I’ve always, always had such a strong urge to travel, and I’m at my happiest when I’m clutching my passport and about to embark on a new adventure, whether it’s somewhere I’ve been before or a completely new place, there’s always something left to be discovered.

Over the last 18 months I’ve really upped my travel content on FMIF, I first started writing about it when I went on a 6 week backpacking trip to Thailand two summers ago and I haven’t looked back since. I used to write my tips for budget travelling or feature a hotel or great restaurant I’ve stayed in. Since then I’ve shared stories of my travels on FMIF from Malaysia to Portugal, to a in-depth Paris city guide or my favourite London hotspots.

I really enjoy sharing my travels and discoveries with you guys and my main aim for 2016, both personal and blog wise was to travel more and I’m so honoured that I have an amazing platform that I can share it with you guys on! I sat down one day in late October hatched a plan, to travel 12 countries in 12 months and to share my findings with you all.

I started by writing a list of the top countries I wanted to visit including Canada, Iceland, Croatia and the Maldives then I started to work out what time of year I’d like to visit, would the weather be good? Where will I go? Are there any events or festivals that I can go to whilst there? After a lot of planning and brainstorming, an idea was born!

I decided that I will come home in between each trip (I wish my savings would allow me to continuously travel for a whole year!) and the only rule I set myself was to spend a minimum of two days in each country so I can get a good feel for the place i’m visiting. I also wanted at least half of the countries to be places that I’d never visited before as it’s always so exciting to visit somewhere completely new with a fresh set of eyes.

I’m kicking off this project with a two day city break to one of my favourite cities; Paris with my blogger babe Megan from Pages by Megan. Megan asked me back in December if I wanted to head to Paris with her and I could hardly turn it down, see what me and Megan got up to in Paris here, I’m going to be posting my first #12Countries12Months post soon along with my first ever travel vlog, eek!

It feels so surreal that this idea is finally being put into action as it felt like i’d be dreaming and planning it forever, I have my destinations secured up until June then I’ll be open to suggestions – if there’s anywhere I must visit please, please let me know as I can’t wait to plan the rest of my trips to share with you all. Also if there is anywhere you’d like recommendations/advice on, again please let me know and hopefully I can tie it in with one of my trips! Do keep an eye out for my destinations as I reveal them as I’d love to hear your tips (*spoiler, March’s location is insane!!).

I have been saving up for this project since I started planning it, and although I don’t have tonnes saved I’m determined to make this project work and see it through until 2017. I always had a feeling that 2016 would be my year, I’m going to embrace every opportunity that comes my way and explore new adventures, I can’t wait to share my travel plans with you all and am so excited that you can come along for the ride. Along the way I will have support from some hotels, airlines and agencies etc but I will always declare this, and as I said I’ve saved hard for this project so I can spend this year living out my one true passion; travelling!

Are there any places/destinations you can recommend for my project?

This sounds incredible, I’m also trying to make 2016 the year of travelling and try to go to six countries as I love blogging about travel too. Your Paris trip looked fab! xo

This sounds amazing! I’m excited to follow your travels, I really want to make 2016 the year I travel solo for the first time but i’m not sure i’m ready for it yet!

This sounds like it’s going to be a great year for you. What a great idea this is. I look forward to seeing what countries you are going to visit.
    Can I come to?

Wonderful! I’m excited to “come along” for the experience!
My credit card company doubled my limit so I booked a direct flight to Costa Rica with BA as they’ll be flying there direct from April.
I can’t wait! And I have enough time to save up a decent amount for the trip.
I’ve also made an intention to travel as much as I can this year, even if it’s just day or weekend trips in the UK.
I’ve already been to Stonehenge, Salisbury and Brighton and I’m off to Newquay tomorrow and then back to Brighton for my birthday in two weeks 🙂
How did you arrange support from hotels and airlines etc?

Just discovered your blog after you went to the NTA’s with Hannah and I love it! This is SO exciting – I also love travelling but work means I only have a limited amount of time off – boo hoo!! I’ve already booked 4 trips though so hoping that number can increase! Although 12 is probably optimistic 😉 Love Sophie xxx

I made the same personal goal for myself in 2016 – though 12 trips not countries so am including things like some UK based trips in there too. Looking forward to following your adventures!

How amazing! I love the idea so much. I also really love to travel but unfortunately i can’t do too much this year because of work commitments but I will definitely follow your adventures and I may have to pinch this idea for next year.

This is thrilling!! Love the idea!! 2016 will be a year of travelling for me too.

LOVE your blog and I can’t wait to read your adventures 🙂

I absolutely love this idea; working at a travel company means I get the wanderlust bug a lot! What a lot of us are doing is lots of weekend breaks in Europe, as it means you’re always being busy instead of one big holiday that you wish your whole year away to get to!
Can’t wait to follow on with this!
