#TipsTuesday: 9 Reasons Why The Olympus PEN Is THE Blogging Camera That You NEED In Your Life!

Image: Holly McGlynn (taken during LFW of my Olympus PEN)

Back in the summer, before I headed to Thailand I decided to purchase the Olympus PEN E-PL7, I’d heard so many good things about it from fellow bloggers and attended an Olympus event in partnership with Topshop where I got to test out the camera for myself. I’d wanted one for so long but finally decided to take the plunge and purchase it as I didn’t want to carry my SLR around Thailand with me as it’s just too bulky.

Fast forward 4 months and I’ve sold my Canon 600D, it was just sitting in it’s camera bag untouched so I decided to sell it and just use my PEN. I never took my SLR to London for days out and events as it was too heavy to carry around for the day so I sold it and now only use my PEN, and I haven’t looked back since, here’s why…

1.) The camera has a flip down screen which is so great for ALL THE SELFIES (V. important feature for bloggers!).

2.) Download the ‘Olympus share’ app and you can send images via WIFI straight to your phone so you have high quality images ready to share straight to your social channels. Also you don’t need to actually be connected to the internet to send pictures over so whilst I was travelling, on a plane or sat by the pool I’d be transferring all my images over ready for use.

3.) You can set the image to square if you want to get that Instagram shot (I know IG images don’t need to be square anymore but I still like to shoot mine on square!).

4.) The Olympus PEN has been dubbed ‘the blogging camera’ and pretty much any amazing image you see from a blogger, there’s a very good chance it’s been shot on the PEN as this camera is so incredibly popular amongst bloggers right now (because it’s that amazing!).

5.) I also purchased the 45mm lens which is amazing for outfit shots as it fully blurs the background and was well worth the investment! Priced around £150-£180 it’s fairly affordable too compared to some lenses!

6.) Join in with the #OlympusPenGeneration hashtag for major inspiration and to hopefully get your image on the @Olympus_pengeneration page – they shared one of my images! Also this is a great account to check out if you’re thinking of purchasing as you can browse the quality of images shot on the PEN! (trust me it won’t take you long to be convinced this is the camera for you!).

7.) Priced at around £400-£500 depending on where you shop, this camera is fairly pricey but I promise it will be the best investment you make. So much so that I sold my SLR and now only shoot with the PEN, in my eyes it was worth every penny and my images have improved ten fold.

8.) Fashion photographer Jay McLaughlin collaborates with bloggers to shoot their outfit pictures using the Olympus PEN to show you the level of imagery able to be achieved on the PEN. I was fortunate enough to shoot with Jay a few weeks back, you can check out my outfit pictures shot on the PEN here and here!

9.) It’s probably the most photogenic camera I’ve ever seen. Just. So. Pretty *hearts in eye emoji*.

What are your thoughts of the Olympus PEN? Do you think you’d purchase one?

I have the Olympus for more lifestyle/events/vlogging material and it's so handy – light and looks great quality in comparison to my DSLR! I still love my DSLR, but this is fab for an easy to transport camera 🙂

I do kind of want to pick this up but i'm never sure if it's worth investing a lot in a camera for my blog when it isn't my job and I probably wouldn't use it otherwise. It has such amazing features though, it's definitely on my wish list so maybe someday! xx

Completely understand love as it is a big chunk of money, maybe pop into store and have a play with it and see what you think 🙂 x

I can't wait to get my hands on it. Currently have an older version, but I would love having the flip screen for vlogging purposes.

Would you recommend it for vlogging at all? Or is it purely for photos? Thanks for a great post lovely one. 🙂
