A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO LFW

With London Fashion Week kicking off this Friday I thought I’d put together my top tips if you’re planning to attend this season…
Anyone can attend: I think there’s a lot of stigma attached to LFW and how people think it’s really exclusive and you have to be invited to attend, whilst you do need tickets for any shows and events, anyone can take to the cobbles and walk around Somerset House courtyard, One of my favourite things to do during LFW is to hang out at Somerset House – you see some crazy outfits, it’s great for street style snaps (collate your favourite into a blog post), and celeb/blogger spotting. If you do wish to attend the Exhibition inside Somerset then you also need to apply and can do that here, they have a blogger category so you can attend on behalf of your blog – I’m not sure how hard it is to get a pass these days as the last time I applied for one was two years ago as I’ve worked it ever since.

Take a tonne of business cards: As I mentioned in my previous post it’s great to hang out in the courtyard as you’re forever bumping into your favourite blogger idols, celebs and designers. Make sure you take a stack of your blog business cards as the most important people in the fashion and beauty industry attend and you never know who you’ll meet!

Have the confidence to approach people:  Again, this point follows on from my last one – arm yourself with your business cards and don’t be afraid to approach people. If you spot your favourite blogger no matter how ‘big’ or ‘small’ why not head over to say hi and introduce yourself, I’ve done it many a times and everyone I’ve met has been lovely – it can be a little nerve racking at first but I’ve never had a bad experience or anyone being rude. However, if someone looks like they are dashing to a show or in a rush then don’t approach them, always make sure the situation in suitable.
Be prepared with tech back ups!: This one is key for me as being a blogger you’ll need your phone and camera with you. Make sure your phone is fully charged and you have enough storage for you to snap away – the last thing you need is trying to catch your favourite show or celeb and you have no battery or phone storage! Rob actually bought me a portable charger which I take with me every season, I make sure it’s fully charged as it has 3 full charges in it.
I also take my Iphone charger as an extra, extra back up just in case I need to pop into a Starbucks for an emergency recharge failing my portable charger. Also, make sure your camera and any other equipment is fully charged and you have a least one spare empty memory card with you – you never want to be caught out and it really does pay to be over-prepared!

Keep a notebook handy: I always keep a small notebook in my bag so I can jot down any shows/designers/collections I love, any bloggers/people I meet (slot any business cards you pick up into your notebook too) as it’s great to follow up after the LFW craziness and keep in touch with anyone you meet. It’s also great to have a notebook to hand in case your phone/tablet dies then you can take any notes needed.

LFW essentials: A lot of people have the perception that LFW is ‘all glam’ and while many parts of it are, it’s easy to forget that you’ll be running around for 8 hours a day (usually in the rain) knowing the weather in London, hoping on and off the tube like there’s no tomorrow and the sleepless nights. I always pack an essentials kit to make the weekend slightly easier on myself, here’s what i’ll be taking this season:
– Flat shoes (fold up ones are great as you can pop them into your bag no matter how big or small and I assure you, you’ll be needing them by the end of the day).
– Tissues/hand sanitiser/hand cream
– An umbrella
– A mirror
– Makeup – some powder to keep away any shine (some blotting sheets if you prefer) and if you’re wearing lipstick pack that so you can keep it topped up
– Notebook, phone charger and portable charger – (see my points above)
– My camera and camera case
– Sunglasses (in case of the rare off chance the sun actually comes out)
– Mints and a snack such as a breakfast bar (when you’re running between shows sometimes you don’t know when you’ll next be eating and you don’t want to feel faint so take something with you).
– Business cards (lots of them)
Do you have any tips of attending LFW? I hope you found this post useful if you’re are attending this season!
