A few weeks back Endsleigh got in touch to see if i’d like to take part in their ‘Shut off and Shut down after 9pm’ campaign – after reading a few shocking stats I decided to give it a go and see if I could last without my laptop/phone/Ipad after 9pm for a week. It is said that on average we check our phones 221 a day (say whaaaaa?!!) and that smartphones could be ruining our sleep – I have to admit I do always find it hard to ‘shut down’ after I’ve been browsing Instagram for the past half hour!
I took on this challenge over the Christmas week as I thought it’s the time of year to spend with loved ones and not aimlessly checking my social media feeds. I didn’t find the challenge as hard as I thought I might over this week as I had lots of plans – a friends wedding, as well as lots of family gatherings and evenings spent with friends so it was nice to have a distraction. On Christmas day itself I had to upload an image to Instagram for work but other than that I didn’t check my social media feeds all day, it was so refreshing spending time with people I loved and not worrying about the virtual world for a day. I didn’t actually want to pick up my phone either as I was having so much fun spending time with some of my favourite people.
I’ve found that shutting off any technology after 9pm has really helped me get a better nights sleep as my mind is wondering what blog post I can next right about, or what my next Instagram post could be, or what X or Z is doing/wearing/getting for Christmas! Of a night I’ve taken to snuggling in bed with my blanket, lighting all of my candles and settling down to read a good book to get me ready for bed. A few inspirational books that I recently picked up and can’t wait to get stuck into are Not That Kind Of Girl by Lena Dunham and #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso.
The first thing I do in the morning and the last thing I do at night it usually check my phone but for 2015 this is going to be something that I try to change as there’s more important things in life. I think it’s about time we all took a step back and focused on what’s important to our lives and appreciated them! Would you consider switching off after 9pm? I’d love to know if you take part and how you find the challenge!
How do you switch off from technology?
